DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

Chemistry & Biochemistry Major Requirements

Major & Minor Requirements - This collection of documents is designed to help prospective Undergraduate students learn about the programs in our Department, including general information, suggested preparation, an outline of each program offered, and lists of course offerings.

Undergraduate Student Manual- Contains information on the Department, research, honors program, waitlisting policies, and campus resources

Students are bound to the calendar year they enter into the major, either by petition or acceptance into the University as a Chemistry B.A., B.S., or Biochemistry B.S. major.

Pre-Requisite - Prerequisites are strictly enforced.  Most Chemistry courses build upon prerequisite or preparatory course work. Students who have not successfully completed the prerequisites for a course will not be allowed to register.  Specific course prerequisite information can be found on GOLD or in the the UCSB Catalog. If you are unsure if you meet a prerequisite or need to repeat a course, please see the undergraduate academic advisor.

Chemistry Minor

Before declaring a full major in the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department all students, regardless of which major, must complete the Pre-Chemistry Major requirements, which are described in more detail below.

Declaring a Major

Provided you have met the Pre-Chemistry Major requirements, you will need to fill out a Change of Major Petition to declare your major. (You can find this petition using the link provided, or by visiting the Chemistry Advising Office and finding the box located in the hallway.)

The Change of Major Petition must be completed and returned to the Chemistry Advising Office for processing and department approval. Our normal processing time is about 2-3 weeks, although delays are very likely during certain times of the academic year and if volume is unusually high.

Requirements for declaring a full major

Freshman admits may declare the full major at the end of their second year provided that they have completed all of the following 6 areas with a GPA of at least 2.0 in each sequence of courses: Chem 1A-B-C or 2A-B-C, Chem 1A-B-C Lab or 1AL 2BC & 2CC, Chem 6AL & 6BL/6BH, Chem 109ABC or 109ABC Honors, Math 3A-B & 4A, and Physics 1-2-3-4 or 6A-B-C. Please see the Pre-Chemistry major requirement sheet for more detailed information.

Note: Physics 1-2-3-4 is required for the Chemistry B.S. major

At the time of petition for full major, you must have a 2.0 or higher grade point average in all courses attempted toward the major within preparatory and within upper division. Also grades earned must meet the grade prerequisites for the full major.

Non-Chemistry majors switching to the Chemistry/Biochemistry major:

Any student may declare the pre-chemistry major after successful completion of 2 quarters of Chemistry, 2 quarters of Math, 2 quarters of Physics.
